Online store finds ChatGPT ads twice as effective as Google
Dutch e-commerce site Beslist.nl is seeing shoppers click on ads in ChatGPT at double the rate of Google Shopping ads—and it costs less per click.
Beslist.nl, a popular Dutch online marketplace, just started running ads inside ChatGPT (an AI assistant that answers questions and has conversations with millions of users). After just a few days, they noticed something surprising: people are clicking on their ads much more often than they do on Google Shopping ads.
Specifically, their click-through rate—the percentage of people who see an ad and actually click it—is more than twice as high in ChatGPT compared to Google. On top of that, each click costs them significantly less money. This is important because online retailers pay every time someone clicks their ad, so lower costs mean better value.
Why might this be happening? When people search on Google, they see many ads and have lots of choices. But ChatGPT works differently—it has conversations with users and can recommend products naturally, almost like a personal shopping assistant. People may trust these recommendations more, or simply find them easier to act on.
This early success suggests that advertising inside AI chatbots like ChatGPT could become a serious competitor to Google's advertising business. As more companies test ads in ChatGPT, we'll learn whether this early promise holds up over time.
