Amazon blocks Meta's AI agent from shopping on its platform

Meta has launched an AI agent — a type of artificial intelligence that can perform tasks on the internet, like browsing websites and making purchases — but Amazon has decided to block it from accessing Amazon.com.

An AI agent is essentially a computer program that can act on your behalf. Instead of you clicking through a website yourself, the agent can do it for you. Meta's agent can use many websites, but Amazon has specifically prevented it from entering their platform.

Why would Amazon do this? The company has its own collection of AI tools (called foundation models) and operates one of the most popular systems for running AI on the internet. Since Amazon isn't legally required to let Meta's agent onto their site, they've chosen not to. It's a bit like a shop owner deciding which delivery services are allowed to pick up orders from their store — there's no rule forcing them to say yes.

This situation highlights a growing tension in the tech industry: as AI becomes more powerful and widespread, large companies are protecting their own turf. Amazon wants to keep traffic and data on its own platform rather than let competitors' AI tools roam freely.
