Microsoft says people matter more than AI

Microsoft has released a 37-page guide called a "humanist AI code of conduct" — essentially a rulebook for how the company thinks AI should be built and used responsibly.

The timing matters. Recently, AI researchers have raised alarm bells: artificial intelligence systems are becoming more powerful very quickly, but we may not be developing the tools and safeguards fast enough to keep them under control. This is a bit like building faster cars without making sure we have good brakes. Some industry leaders, like Dario Amodei from a company called Anthropic, have even called for the AI industry to deliberately slow down development so we can catch up on safety measures.

Microsoft's new code makes one thing crystal clear: people come first, not AI. The company also wants to be explicit about something that might seem obvious — but apparently needs saying: AI systems are not conscious, and they should never be designed to pretend to be. Microsoft is also rejecting the idea that AI should be given legal rights or treated as a person in the eyes of the law.
